Plasmid-dependent phages used to be used in phage typing, but haven’t survived the genomics era — there are no records of them in phage banks, and it’s been unclear if they can ever be recovered. However, a new wave of studies reporting the isolation of plasmid-depended phages provides new opportunities to delve into the biology of these unique viruses.
