Mar Pérez-Ruiz (National Centre for Biotechnology, Spain) and colleagues published a paper in PNAS on how phage T7 core components assemble to allow DNA translocation across the bacterial envelope. They solved the structures of the core proteins gp15 and gp16, confirmed their ability to form tubes compatible with the periplasmic space, uncovering key new structural details of core translocation complex assembly.
