Graham Hatfull (University of Pittsburgh) and colleagues published a new review in Annual Review of Medicine on phage therapy for antibiotic-resistant bacterial Infections. They conclude that given the strong safety profiles of phages, the main challenges involve strain variation among clinical isolates, phage resistance, and the limitations of host immune responses. They conclude that the opportunities are considerable, with the potential to enhance and protect antibiotic efficacy, and provide a last resort in response to complete antibiotic failure.
