The University of Northern Iowa Department of Biology serves the state of Iowa by preparing the next generation of highly qualified graduates for opportunities in the life sciences, readying them for careers in healthcare, education, scientific research, and natural resource management. Our lone virologist, Michael H. Walter, characterizes phages of Bacillus anthracis/cereus derived from Iowa Prairie soils. Research foci include phage physical durability under conditions potentially found in therapy applications. We are also examining phage durability and possible increase in macrophages defense cells.
