Yunxue Guo (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and colleagues discovered a reverse transcriptase-mediated mechanism of prophage genome reduction in P. aeruginosa biofilms, showing that Pf4 phage-encoded RT and an ncRNA collaborate to generate superinfective variants with ~27% smaller genomes, promoting phage dissemination in biofilms.
