Simon Roux (DOE Joint Genome Institute) and colleagues published a new preprint on diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs), which were first identified in a phage host recognition protein. They analyzed >30,000 metagenome-derived DGRs, and gained many new insights about their evolution and likely role in driving viral and cellular adaptation to their environments.
