Phage-infected Synechococcus release metabolites that attract marine bacteria before lysis (Nature Microbiology)

Metabolites released from intact, phage-infected Synechococcus strongly attracted the marine bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus and Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, especially in early infection, while uninfected cyanobacteria did not. 5'-deoxyadenosine and 5'-methylthioadenosine were identified as key attractants, suggesting a pre-lysis route for resource transfer that might affect carbon and nutrient fluxes.
