Mary Eliza (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Germany) and colleagues published a new paper exploring the influence of a prophage on two different strains of rhizobia during their symbiosis with legumes. They show that while in one strain, many rhizobial genes (including those involved in nitrogen fixation) are differentially downregulated, and in the second strain there is no change in gene expression whatsoever.
