M. J. N. Thomas (University of Manchester) and colleagues published a new paper in mSystems called ‘What makes a temperate phage an effective bacterial weapon?’. They combine mathematical models and experimental work to reveal how temperate phage traits like lysis probability and induction rate determine their effectiveness. They found that the optimal combination of traits varied with the initial frequency of lysogens within a population.
