Linyi Gao (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Cambridge, MA) and colleagues published a new paper in Science describing their discovery of 29 new phage-protective gene cassettes, many of which incorporate enzymatic activities not previously implicated in antiviral defense, and which are collectively present in 32% of sequenced bacterial and archaeal genomes.
