Eric Brown (Harvard Medical School) and colleagues published a paper in Cell Host & Microbe showing that gut microbiome ADP-ribosyltransferases are widespread phage-encoded fitness factors. Previously thought to be restricted to pathogens, they show that ADPRTs are widely prevalent in the human gut microbiome, often associated with phage elements, and improve bacterial fitness in the gut.
