CRISPR adaptation in Streptococcus thermophilus benefits from phage environmental DNA

Felix Croteau (McMaster University) and colleagues published a new paper on phage environmental DNA enhancing CRISPR adaptation, showing that free phage DNA in lysates increases phage-insensitive mutant generation through natural competence, but surprisingly does not provide genetic material for spacer acquisition.
