Phage self recognition
Sooyeon Song and colleagues have published a new paper showing that E. coli employs both active (lytic and temperate) and inactive phages (a cryptic prophage) to discriminate between nearby strains and control cell-cell contact according to whether a nearby strain is kin or non-kin.
